| The Rotary Club of Wadebridge was inaugurated on 3rd November 1959, so this year the Club celebrates 51 years of Rotary in the town.
The Club currently has 36 members and meets each Thursday at the Swan Hotel, Wadebridge at 6.00 p.m. for 6.30 p.m. for the weekly dinner meetings. Usually, Council and Business meetings are held on the first two Thursdays in the month, guest speakers attend the remaining meetings, with Ladies Nights being held on any 5th Thursday in the month. Members are encouraged to bring guests to the speaker meetings when they can experience the fellowship and fun enjoyed by Rotarians in Wadebridge.
In our Club we have a number of sub committees, each of which is responsible for various activities and fund-raising events, dealing with requests for support from outside charities. During the recent past we have successfully raised in excess of £11,000 each year for charitable causes. We are particularly keen to support local youth and a variety of local Cornish charities. This year, Cornwall Hospice Care and Fleet will be major beneficiaries of what, we hope, will be another very successful Wheels/Think You Can Drive event held at the Royal Cornwall Showground in July each year. In addition to which, we send aid to International emergencies (often via Shelterbox) and contribute to our own Rotary Foundation, which is the third largest charity in the world.
Todays Rotary comprises business and professional men and women (active and retired) who promote high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The
origins of the Rotary Club movement stretch back to 1900 when Paul Harris, a lawyer practising in Chicago, came up with the idea of an organisation which would band together a group of business and professional men with a common aim. In 1905 Harris formed the first official Club, giving it the name Rotary because the members met in rotation in their various places of business. Having laid the foundation, he then endeavoured to extend Rotary to other cities and to develop it into an important service movement. By 1910 there was a network of Clubs across the U.S.A. and by 1912 Rotary had reached Canada and Great Britain. Now there are over 20,000 Rotary Clubs in over 150 countries and geographical regions.
